Resolution concerning Republican candidates and the state party platform as relates to those filing with the Spartanburg County Republican Party (passed January 25, 2010 at the Spartanburg County Republican Party Executive Committee meeting):
BE IT RESOLVED, that the Spartanburg County Republican Party ask each candidate filing for public office as a Republican to declare whether he or she agrees with the platform of the Republican Party of South Carolina, and maintain a record available to the public of the replies of these candidates, along with those disagreements with the platform which a candidate chooses to put in writing.
Comments:
This resolution replaces a resolution passed at the last meeting of the Spartanburg County Republican Party which required that candidates disagreeing with a portion of the Republican platform not be permitted to speak before the Spartanburg County Republican Party's executive committee. Some parts of the state Republican platform are passed by narrow majorities at the state convention, such as registration by party, and the resolution takes into account that a candidate may conscienciously disagree with a part of the state party platform without violating basic Republican principles.
At the same time, the resolution ensures that the public may be informed of those disagreements candidates may have with issues which do involve basic Republican principles, and of those candidates who refuse to make any declaration with respect to the state platform.
The resolution is also consonant with the spirit and wording of state law in that the party imposes no requirements on candidates beyond compliance with state laws regarding filing for public office.
